2013 volkswagen beetle review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Convertible joins sleek, new lineup. introductionthe volkswagen beetle was completely redesigned for 2012. For 2013, beetle convertible joins the lineup. as with the coupe, the 2013 beetle convertible is longer, lower and wider than the new beetle, which is what we called the old one that was phased out after the 2010 model year. It feels like a capsule inside than it did before. front legroom is plentiful, but the beetle coupe's rear seat has just 31. 4 inches of legroom, which is 1. 9 inches less than the subcompact toyota yaris, on a wheelbase that's 1. 1 inches longer. Still, two adult passengers will fit back there; they just sit rather upright. the rear hatch area of the beetle coupe is spacious at 15. 4 cubic feet. With the rear seat folded, the coupe has nearly 30 cubic feet of cargo space, and the high-swinging hatchback enables giant things to fit inside, making the coupe handy for hauling. The beetle convertible has a trunk with only 7. 1 cubic feet of space. the beetle seats and trim are neat but not fancy. The bucket seats are simple and comfortable, with excellent bolstering. instrumentation is so clean it's memorable for its rarity. In the center of the big clear speedometer there's a multi-function digital display, accessed with a flick of the driver's right thumb, scrolling a small wheel on the steering wheel. It makes for safe driving. the 2. 5-liter inline five-cylinder engine, with an iron block and dual overhead cams, carries on, delivering 170 horsepower. Torque is 177 pound-feet at 4250 rpm. Acceleration with the 2. 5-liter engine is adequate, and 75 mph on the freeway is smooth and mostly effortless. a 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed automatic transmission optional. The automatic did not wow us. The automatic has manual shift capability, but it's done with side-to-side movements using the lever. It's better than nothing, but it's not racy. The manual gearbox is satisfying and gives the car pep when accelerating. We recommend the manual. a 2. 0-liter turbo model is also available that comes with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automated manual that vw calls a dsg for direct shift gearbox. The turbo also has sportier suspension tuning. The 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine makes 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque at a low 1700 rpm, and it gets about the same fuel mileage as the 2. 5-liter engine although on more expensive premium gasoline. It's hot, with acceleration not far behind a mini cooper s. also available is the tdi turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine, which delivers jaw-dropping torque and fuel mileage on the far side of 40 mpg. The 2. 0-liter turbodiesel delivers 236 pound-feet of torque. The tdi engine has been used successfully for some time in the golf and jetta models and is well-proven. It's clean and runs quietly. coupe or convertible, the beetle chassis is rigid and the body solid, with subframes front and rear, supporting the suspensions. Vw did a lot of work to make the convertible impressively rigid. the base coupe uses a torsion beam rear suspension, but the beetle turbo and all convertibles use a more sophisticated multi-link, for a higher threshold of cornering. The freeway ride in the base coupe doesn't suffer for the torsion beam. It's comfortable and consistent. Potholes don't hurt, but rough pavement can make the rear end of the coupe want to dance. The other models are more composed over rough pavement. lineupthe 2013 beetle model lineup includes 2. 5l, turbo and tdi models in coupe and convertible body styles with additional models defined by extra equipment. The convertible also adds automatic pop-up roll bars. It's not quite as cute and feminine, but it is just as identifiable as it's ever been. The coupe's coefficient of drag is 0. 37, a good number that still lags behind some competitors, and reveals the legacy of a round bug. The beetle convertible comes in at a close 0. 38 cd. The 2012 honda civic, by comparison, slips in under 0. 32. (a lower number is better.) looking head-on at the beetle, it's wide and chubby enough that the lines are actually horizontal. A narrow black mouth under the bumper spans the face like a pinched grin, under perky headlamps like eyes, and a hood seam that seems to define a wide nose, having one chrome nostril with vw in it. at profile, the good-looking roofline is like a stylish tight arc, reminiscent of the 2005 concept car called the ragster, which had the look of a chopped-top hot rod. the wheel cutouts are perfect semi-circles dropping down toward the pavement. In contrast to the smooth curves of sheet metal everywhere else, the fender flares have squared edges, offering contrasting definition to the shape. the beetle coupe might be called a hatchback. The rear gate is massive. Vw had to make no compromises to the car's shape for the utility of cargo loading. When the hatch is closed, it flows invisibly into the car's roundness. the convertible, on the other hand, has a trunk that sits below the hold for the convertible soft top. The top opens in just 9. 5 seconds and closing in 11 at speeds up to 31 mph. It's like the old bug, in a welcome way. volkswagen does gauges well, and the beetle's are super clean. There's a big speedometer in the center, insanely optimistic at 160 mph, with organic white numbers and red needles. All-new, with diesel and gas versions for all 50 states. introductionthe volkswagen golf is all-new for 2010. Available only on the diesel model, aka the tdi for turbocharged direct injection, this is a six speed, automated manual, aka the dsg for direct shift gearbox. Utilizing a technology heretofore available only on pricier sporty sedans and high end sports cars, the dsg uses an automated twin clutch setup that engages and disengages gears without the driver having to operate a clutch pedal. Alternatively, much like the tiptronic automatic that's optional on the 2. 5-liter golf, the dsg permits the driver manually to select the gears, which is pretty much the best of two worlds: the efficiency of a manual transmission but the convenience of an automatic. also new for the 2010 golf is a restyled body, with a sportier grille, sleeker flanks and stylish rear fascia. Both seat five. the standard 2. 5-liter five-cylinder puts out a very usable 170 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 177 pound-feet of torque at 4250 rpm. The 2. 5-liter gets an epa-estimated 22/30 mpg city/highway, or 23/30 mpg with the six-speed tiptronic. This translates to responsive performance around town from the tdi, doing the kind of driving most of us do most of the time. The tdi comes standard with a six speed manual, optional with a six speed, dual clutch, automated manual, called the direct shift gearbox, or dsg. Save for rounding off once squared fenders and roof lines and tweaking the grille styling and the brake light arrangement, volkswagen has shown remarkable, some might argue unremarkable, fealty to the model's styling cues though all of its six generations. Body proportions, for instance, have remained stoically the same, which, while perhaps boring, isn't necessarily bad, as it ensures a continuum of recognition for the marque's price leader. Still, a little inspiration here and there might not terminally damage the golf's legacy. headlights are rounder than the car's previous iteration, the 2008 rabbit, and bookend a wider, thinner, two bar grille sans any separating sheetmetal. The grille is blacked out, where the predecessor's was painted body color. Likewise, the lower air intake spans the width of the car, with a fuller, richer looking bumper no longer demeaned by low ball black rubber protector strips scarring the corners of that earlier model's fascia. side body panels are more sculpted, with a sharply creased rocker panel outline across the lower portion. The stylists did a decent job of giving the c pillar (the body panel behind the rear most side window) a consistent shape and proportion on the 2 door and 4 door, given the reality of both cars sharing the same wheelbase (distance between front and rear tires) and being equal in overall length. A clearly defined character line tracks rearward from the top of the front fender blister all the way to the upper taillight element, giving the rear fenders a hint of a shoulder. Wheelwells encircle the tires leaving the barest of gaps, visually pulling the car down onto the pavement. Minimalist door handles are snug for hands wearing anything larger than medium size gloves. Gaps between body panels are pencil thin, which suggest high-quality construction. the rear of the new 2010 golf keeps the faith, avoiding anything new or striking in its styling. It is a hatchback, after all, and there's little in the way of excitement that can be done within that limitation. Taillight housings mirror the ovoid shape of the headlights, boosting the rear fenders' shoulder look the aforementioned side body panel character line establishes. The wrap around rear window glass fills the top of the lift gate. An outsized, round vw logo parked in the middle between the taillights doubles as the lever for opening the liftgate. the tdi is distinguished from the 2. 5-liter gas model by an eponymous chrome logo beneath the right taillight, balancing the chrome golf logo both cars wear below the left taillight. An indent in the rear bumper houses the license plate. A flat black extractor like panel minimizes the visual mass of the rear bumper. interiorinside, the 2010 golf shows a not surprising teutonic dedication to an almost austere functionality. Brightwork is confined to touches on steering wheel spokes, around air registers, door handles and tasteful outlines on various knobs and the shifting gear. Textures give good touch. This includes, interestingly, the chevrolet cobalt, a car generally perceived to be larger than the golf, which it betters everywhere, including trunk space by a smidgen more than one 1 foot square cardboard box; about the same holds true for the focus, while the civic's trunk holds three fewer foot-square boxes. That latter, though, is welcome when exploring the golf's relatively high handling limits, as is the grippy cloth upholstery. The eight way adjustable driver's seat works well with the tilt and telescope steering wheel to allow all but the tallest and the most stout drivers a nearly perfect triangulation with steering wheel, pedals and shift lever. Gravy, and much appreciated by the front seat passenger, is the eight way adjustability in that seat, too. air conditioning and sound system controls are comfortably basic in shape, size and duty. Teutonic handling with refined road manners. introductionvolkswagen calls it the world's best-loved hatchback. It corners well, it rides nice, it's comfortable and it's practical. It has soul. those who don't like its styling or don't appreciate the hatchback design just don't get it. Two can sit comfortably in back. It exudes fine german engineering. Gti comes standard with the 1. 8-liter turbocharged engine. Optional automatic transmissions add about $875. A leather package is available for the gti gls for $850. walkaroundvolkswagen golf looks quite contemporary with big, sculptured headlights stuffed with high-tech lighting hardware. with its hatchback design, the golf can carry an enormous amount of cargo. Flip the articulated rear seat bottom, remove the rear headrests and fold one or both rear seats backs down to create a cavernous space. Americans don't buy a lot of hatchbacks, but they are hugely popular in europe, perhaps the most popular body style there. Hatchbacks offer some of the functional benefits of station wagons, including easy access to cargo through side doors and the rear hatch. A split rear seat allows carrying one rear passenger along with luggage and long items like skis or fly rods. A cargo cover shields possessions from prying eyes when the rear seats are flipped up. interiorgolf comes with an unusually high level of standard equipment, including anti-lock disc brakes and side-impact airbags. There's an unexpected level of refinement. Forget the grained plastic wood found in many cars. This trim is the real thing. Stylish instruments look like aircraft components at night with vibrant red needles over backlighted indigo gauges. Power windows with auto-up and auto-down are normally not found in this class. golf's cupholders are well placed and adequate for most container sizes. There's plenty of storage space, with a large glove box, deep door pockets and a center tray that's useful for stowing cellular telephones. Driver and passenger doors use different inside handles that make them easy to close. seats in the 1. 8t are firm and supportive. More side bolstering would help brace driver and passenger in tight corners, however. Seating adjustments are trademark volkswagen with its unique jack to adjust seat height; they are a bit difficult to use at first with an awkward knob for adjusting rake, but familiarity improves this. rear seats seem surprisingly roomy with plenty of headroom for all but the tallest passengers. There's a surprising amount of low-rpm torque here, more than enough to spin the front wheels. Traction control steps in when needed to minimize this, enhancing control. Accelerating through the gears, there's no turbo lag. Instead, the power delivery is fluid and linear.
