2011 subaru impreza review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Value and the beauty of all-wheel drive. introductionthe subaru impreza has been a bestseller for years, and it set sales records in 2010 while others struggled. It packs in a lot, for its size and price. It deserves to be a top choice in foul weather or on rough roads. But it's an easy car to live with even in the best of conditions. It's comfortable and easy to drive. The interior is simple and straightforward, and everything is easy to operate. Cargo capacity after the 60/40 rear seats are dropped is excellent. the impreza is solid and safe, the ideal size for running around town while holding its own on the freeway with trucks and big suvs. Many people nonetheless prefer the lines of a simple sedan. the impreza outback sport comes only as a five-door. It's prepared for travel on unpaved roads and can easily carry gear for outdoor work or activities, from sports to dogs. Outback sport includes 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, a raised suspension, foglights, all-weather package, and cargo tray. This lowers the center of gravity and improves the balance, contributing to agile cornering. What's more, the impreza shares the quick wrx steering rack, with 2. 8 turns lock-to-lock, and a tight 34. 8-foot turning circle. There's no lacking in power at any rpm range. the standard 5-speed manual gearbox works well. Rearview camera is optional. safety equipment on all impreza models includes the subaru advanced frontal airbag system featuring side-impact air bags and full-length airbag curtains. Active safety features include abs with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, electronic stability control with traction control, and all-wheel drive. They also share a character crease in the side, although the 5-door's edginess vanishes in the sedan, which uses old-fashioned red taillamps, an understated black valance under the grille, and a dual exhaust: two pipes versus the 5-door's one. the roofline of the 5-door is only 0. 2 inches higher than the sedan, although the coefficient of drag is 0. 34 vs. 0. 32. (the outback sport is 0. 35 thanks to the roof rack.) the outback sport is a 5-door. Its styling is edgy, with flared fenders, a blocky butt, and short rear overhang with silvery taillamps. A neat nose rises up and back to the aerodynamic spoiler over the liftgate. The roof rack includes high crossbars that add to the outdoorsy look. The ground clearance is raised, but only by a fraction of an inch; the larger wheels (17-inch alloys) with all-season tires add to the rugged look, more aggressive than the smoother but vanilla sedan. The outback sport looks at home on a gravel road high in the mountains. interioreffort and style have gone into the sweeping twin-cockpit design of the impreza cabin. The quality of the interior materials is good. The titanium color for the dashboard trim looks nice. the steering wheel tilts and telescopes, which is good, but it doesn't seem to tilt high enough. Speaking of visibility, rearview vision is adequate in the 5-door hatchback but not great. on the dashboard above the center stack there's a horizontal window with digital readout for temperature, time, and fuel mileage, but it's not readable in the sun, and distance to empty is unavailable. The stack itself contains the usual vents with a six-disc cd changer above big easy climate control knobs. There's a nice shift lever behind a cubby and coinholder, and ahead of two cupholders and a 12-volt outlet; between the seatbacks there's a small deep console. The door pockets hold 32-ounce cups. Their outside edges are rugged and handsome, but the wider center part is made of a material that looks sort of like a pinstripe suit, and which attracts and won't let go of things that commonly float around cabins, especially dog hair. Considering that subaru owners are well-known dog lovers, who take them everywhere, we find this issue with the seats shocking. The available leather-trimmed upholstery would likely be a better choice for dogs. rear-seat accommodations in the 5-door models are average. There's good headroom, while hip and shoulder room in the rear are decent. The rear-seat legroom is a slim 33. 5 inches. The rear seatback angles are reclined for relaxation, and the rear doors open wide, 75 degrees, so ingress and egress is easy, an important quality. cargo capacity in the 5-door, after the 60/40 rear seats are dropped, is excellent for a car of this size. As a runabout that's not too big and not too small, it's solid, safe, simple, and provides standard all-wheel drive so it's ready for any highway driving condition. It's good for the daily commute or for heading to the mountains in january. there are two different all-wheel-drive systems on the impreza models. Those with the manual transmission use locking center differential with viscous coupling, which distributes power evenly between the front and rear wheels on dry pavement, and shifts the torque around only when a tire slips. The models with automatic transmission use what subaru calls active torque split that transfers power based on acceleration and deceleration, as well as slippage. 2011 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sales have been outstanding, with subaru setting an all-time annual sales record in 2010 by a healthy margin, the legacy outback closely leading the forester. the 2011 forester x comes standard with a new, chain-driven double overhead-cam engine, this after many years with its 2. 5-liter belt-driven single-overhead-cam engine. It's the same 2. 5 liters and 170 horsepower, but torque is raised 4 foot-pounds and dropped 300 rpm; and it gets one more mpg, to an epa-estimated 21/27 mpg city/highway. During a week of all-around driving in a forester 2. 5x, we averaged 20. 7 mpg. Forester premium and forester limited models upgrade equipment such as sound systems and get all the right electronic stuff. Every model but the base 2. 5x now comes with bluetooth. An optional navigation system is a modest but effective tomtom (removable), which is much less than the option price of an integrated navigation system. Rear seat legroom is excellent, at 38. 0 inches. That alone is a big plus, and it's one of the reasons the forester is such a good family vehicle. The front door is wide, and the rear doors swing open 75 degrees and feel light, making it easy to get in and out. we drove a turbocharged forester xt and a forester premium with the optional tomtom navigation system. We found the tomtom was just as effective for getting around as navigation systems whose option prices are twice as much, although the buttons, combined with the audio system buttons and screen, were tiny and few. the forester is supremely secure in its sure-footed handling. It will go around corners like few suvs, with its all-wheel drive working to grip the road. Subaru excels at all-wheel drive. The forester has a low center of gravity thanks to its horizontally opposed engine mounted low in the chassis. Rack-and-pinion steering helps give the forester a tight steering radius, similar to the rav4 and tighter than the cr-v, making parking and maneuvering easy. The 2. 5x models come with the new 170-hp engine; 2. 5xt models get the familiar 224-hp turbocharged engine. forester 2. 5x 20,495) comes with rugged cloth upholstery, air conditioning with rear vents and an air filtration system, a 60/40 split rear seat, sound system with single-disc cd, height and lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat, cruise control, rear window wiper, and a trailer wiring connector, and 16-inch steel wheels with wheelcovers. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard. The only options are a 4-speed automatic transmission with manual mode 1000), and 16-inch alloy wheels and roofrails 400). forester 2. 5x premium 23,195) adds 17-inch alloy wheels with wider-profile all-season tires, privacy glass, 10-way power driver's seat, a reclining rear seat with retractable tray, roof rails, power moonroof, and steering wheel audio switches. The 2. 5x premium with automatic transmission 24,195) makes available the removable tomtom navigation system 1095) including the all-weather package. forester 2. 5x limited 26,495) features perforated leather seats in black or platinum, seatback storage pockets, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, new sound system with single-disc cd/dvd player with six speakers, automatic climate control, and foglights. It comes with the automatic transmission and cold-weather package as standard. They're distinguished by a hood scoop that takes air for the turbocharger intercoolers. The 2. 5xt premium gets a new 10-way power driver's seat, the new audio system, and body-colored roof spoiler. Standard equipment includes upgraded cloth upholstery, aluminum pedal covers, telescoping steering column, and foglamps. It's not bad looking, but it's a pragmatic vehicle, not meant to be a pretty one. Its shape is sporty enough, but it doesn't shout sport. It's squarish, but not blocky. It's slightly longer than a honda cr-v, slightly shorter than a toyota rav4, and an inch narrower than both; slightly taller than the cr-v but not as tall as the rav4. the forester's wing-shaped headlamps might be the snazziest feature, somewhat saab-like in their appearance. Nice amber turn signals in the headlamp corners blend into fenders that are nicely wrapped around the car. The hood has sculpted edges, so subtle they're not noticed, but like the headlamps/eyes, the hood is a reminder that looks are not abandoned. the front and rear fascia and rocker panels surround the car, and they're not very pretty in flat black plastic. They too have a function, being more rugged than shiny paint on sheetmetal, although no one does metal fascia any more anyhow. And at least the flat black plastic doesn't continue around the wheelwells, like on some suvs. Also, those wheelwells are not overflared to attract attention. That would be unlike subaru. along the sides, above the flat black rocker panels, there's a straight styling groove where once there were ding strips. the 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels that are standard equipment on the 2. 5x premium are nice. We also like the wheels on the forester xt we drove. the forester xt is mostly distinguished by the scoop on the hood that takes in air for the turbocharger intercooler. From the rear, the xt has a twin chrome-tipped exhaust and a spoiler over the rear window that makes its statement. interiorthe forester cabin is comfortable and the seats are good. We like the leather better than the cloth. The available perforated leather is a whole new ball game, eclipsing the mundane cloth. Forester xt gets sporty aluminum pedals. visibility is excellent through the windshield, with a modest hood, tight front fenders, and a-pillars designed to minimize blind spots. Visibility in the rearview mirror is not so good. The rear glass fills the mirror, but the rear seat headrests, middle seatbelt hanging from the ceiling, and rear center-mounted-stoplamp all intrude.
