1999 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The trendiest of the trucks. introductionford's f-series pickups are proof that barnyard workhorse trucks will never be their squared-off selves again. Aerodynamic outside, luxurious inside, overhead-cam performance under the hood, and safety and convenience features that only a few years ago weren't available on cars, let alone trucks, the ford f-series pickups are as modern as trucks get.  for 1999, the f-series trucks sport a revised front-end appearance with big new grilles, valance panels and chrome bumpers. Wheelbase lengths of 119. 9 in., 138. 5 in. And this year, ford has increased the power of its 5. 4-liter v8 significantly to 260 horsepower and 345 foot-pounds of torque. But, by and large, there ought to be something here for just about anybody. The xlt trim includes several items that might otherwise be options. The total for this high-line truck came to $31,450. In smoothness, it embarrasses every other full-size truck engine on the market. The power delivery is crisp and responsive, and to good low-end power it adds excellent mid-range and higher-speed power to make short work of real-world demands such as quick acceleration to freeway speeds. Peak horsepower has been increased by 25 to 260 horsepower. Torque is up by 15 foot-pounds to 345.  the f-series front suspension uses upper and lower control arms. It replaced the ancient twin i-beam, and we're thankful. With this suspension, the ride is far better, handling is superior, steering feel is drastically improved and directional stability, such as when traveling at highway speeds in a severe crosswind, is immensely enhanced. We would expect that tire wear would also be better, as this was one of the many weak points of the twin i-beam. With the 40/60 split-bench front seat, driver and passenger have individually reclining backrests. What can serve as the center backrest is also a folding armrest; when folded forward, it provides a large cupholder and capacious bin. Inside this storage bin are places for coins, cassette tapes and so forth, and a divider which, when removed, allows space for an 8 1/2 x 11-inch tablet. There are a pair of cupholders in the instrument panel, and a goodly number of the expected storage compartments and map pockets here and there.  the view outward is superb, as the f-series styling includes a low beltline and big windows all around. Even fairly short drivers should have decent forward visibility. The only vision-related gripe we had was a vertically narrow inside rear-view mirror, which cut down on the view to the rear.  all supercabs include a third door on the passenger's side for entry to the back seat. This door is operable once the passenger's door is open, and can be opened from inside or out. Two adults should be reasonably comfortable on longer trips in the back seat. With the rear seat folded forward there's a flat, sturdy steel surface, great for carrying toolboxes or large amounts of luggage. driving impressionpeople familiar with trucks, particularly those familiar with ford trucks, will find the driving experience in the new f-series greatly enhanced. A high degree of directional stability adds to safety and comfort because it keeps the vehicle headed down its intended path.  ride, too, is remarkably good. One big problem with pickup trucks has always been how poorly they tend to ride when empty; this can become really annoying on long trips down concrete interstates where trucks can bounce ceaselessly. There's no truck-like roar or rumble, no feeling that it starts thrashing at higher speeds. Whether driving around the city or taking an extended highway cruise, the 5. 4-liter triton engine is the most velvety full-size pickup truck engine we've encountered. The smaller, 4. 6-liter version is equally smooth, but it's less powerful, and we highly recommend the stronger 5. 4-liter v8. But the ford is certainly the sleekest of the bunch.  there's a lot to like about it in addition to the look. The interior is extraordinary, the triton v8s are silky and strong, the ride and drive is exceptional and it's full to the brim with worthwhile features. 1999 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Minor improvements throughout make it better. introductionif mousetraps were 17 feet long, one might characterize the expedition as ford's better mousetrap. Since its introduction three years ago, ford's biggest sport-utility vehicle has been a resounding sales success. The assembly plant in wayne, michigan, has been running full steam to meet the demand for the expedition and its luxurious near-twin, the lincoln navigator.  why is the expedition so successful? The reasons may go beyond the current enthusiasm for large sport-utilities. The expedition is selling like hot cakes at least partly because it does everything it was designed to do and it does it well. Its good looks certainly don't hurt, either.  with demand running high, ford has wisely made only evolutionary changes for 1999. Both engines get more power -- without hurting epa fuel economy ratings. The expedition has been certified for 1999 as a low-emissions vehicle, or lev, in states that have adopted california's tougher emissions regulations.  a new front fascia, grille and bumper system with fog lamps incorporated into the lower valence give the expedition a fresh look. And the base model comes with more standard equipment; even though the base price has gone up, this move actually lowers many out-the-door prices. walkaroundthe stylists at ford took a sensible approach when they set out to shape the expedition. They already had two winners to their credit -- the f-150 pickup and the explorer. So they borrowed the best elements from each to create another success. From nose to windshield, the expedition shares sheet metal with the f-150. No panels interchange between expedition and explorer, but the resemblance is unmistakable.  this combination of ingredients works well. The expedition is handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect attention to aerodynamics. It's a design that pays off with improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise. As a matter of necessity, the sides and back are shaped more for utility than style. Clever use of trim and rounded corners provides some visual definition, however.  stretching more than 17 feet from nose to tail, the expedition is certainly no compact. There's no way to disguise that. Gm's suburban is even longer, adding a foot-and-a-half to the total. Ford touts the expedition's shorter length as a benefit when trying to fit into a garage. With little demand for plain, entry-level vehicles in this class, ford equips the xlt well and the eddie bauer even better. Two seating configurations are available. Ordered with optional front bucket seats and a center bench, the expedition can comfortably haul five passengers. Ordered with the standard front full-width seat and center bench makes room for six passengers. Well-padded chairs provide comfortable seating.  the optional third-row bench provides seating for two more passengers -- three if they are small. First- and second-row occupants get separate heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; a third set of controls for the third seat is optional.  a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be reached. Soft-touch coverings are applied to switches and door panels. The window switches are lighted internally at night, a nice touch that not all vehicles carry. One new optional feature this year is an industry first: at the touch of a dashboard-mounted switch, the pedal cluster can be electrically adjusted fore-and-aft. Surprisingly, this bulk doesn't make it especially difficult to drive. Speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort low. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. Lots of large windows, along with big mirrors, make it easy to see in all directions. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however.  the ride quality is good, though it is not as soft as that of a traditional family sedan or wagon. An advantage of the expedition's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. When driven on back roads, the expedition does not lean unduly in corners, nor does the front end dive excessively under hard braking.  an optional load-leveling system uses compressed air to compensate for varying loads while improving ride quality. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height. While serious rock-climbing is not suggested, occasional forays off the beaten path can be undertaken without fear of being left stranded. The 4. 6-liter and 5. 4-liter v8s are identical save for displacement. They are smooth and quiet. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 345 foot-pounds of torque, enabling it to pull a trailer of up to 8300 pounds -- when ordered as a 4x2 with 16-inch wheels and the 3. 73 axle ratio. An expedition 4x4 with the smaller 4. 6-liter engine and big 17-inch wheels can only muster 5500 pounds. summaryeven though this year's changes are relatively minor, the expedition enters its third year as the clear leader of its class. Its blend of strength, refinement, comfort, good road manners and exceptional finish quality is not matched by the current suburban. The shorter length of the expedition is an admission ticket to a larger number of garages.  the lure of the expedition is its versatility. The expedition can carry a large family in limousine-like splendor, pull a trailer, move cargo or explore places beyond pavement's end. assembled inwayne, michigan. options as testedall-terrain tires 380) with 17-inch alloy wheels 185), limited-slip differential 255), skid plate package 105), trailer towing package 390), load-leveling suspension 815), trailer towing group 390), skid plate package 105), power adjustable pedals 120), 3. 73 ratio rear axle, california emissions, and comfort convenience group 2,560), which includes captain's chairs with center floor console and six-way adjustable power driver's seat, third-row removable bench seat rear seat, rear heating and air conditioning, privacy glass, dual illuminated visor mirrors. model testedxlt 4x4. 1999 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A perennial best-seller. introductionthe big news for the taurus this year is that the price has dropped. The base lx is $1000 less than last year, dropping to $17,995. The upscale se dropped $1080 to $18,995, while the se wagon is down $1840 to $19,995. It was the best-selling car in the u. From 1992 to 1996 and more than 357,000 were sold last year. The taurus is popular in rental car fleets. And in just one year it has assumed a starring role on the booming nascar winston cup circuit. walkaroundmost people either like the styling of the taurus or they don't. The current model makes a bolder design statement than the previous generation. The theme is oval inside and out.  both lx and se come standard with the vulcan 3. 0-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 145 horsepower. Optional for both is a double overhead-cam, 32-valve, 3. 0-liter duratec v6 that makes 185 hp.  (the $29,550 taurus sho comes with a 235-horsepower 3. 4-liter dohc v8. Shift quality was a persistent criticism of first-year editions of this latest-generation taurus, so ford recalibrated the computer controls changed the torque converter and used a different final-drive ratio. The result is smoother, more efficient shifting. The more powerful duratec engine comes with a higher stall-speed torque converter to allow it to rev more quickly to its most efficient operating range. This combines with a numerically higher axle ratio to produce quicker off-the-line acceleration.  it has taken detroit a while to come to parity with the europeans and japanese in the suspension department, and the taurus is a good example of getting it right. The front suspension is a macpherson strut design with a lower control arm and stabilizer bar. The advantage is a more precisely positioned suspension to maximize handling and response. There are disc brakes in front with drum brakes at the rear. The wagon and the sho get rear discs. Abs is optional on the wagon, standard on the sho. interiorthe exterior oval theme is picked up inside on the instrument panel, vents and door handle recesses. But give it some time. In an era when most instrument panels all seem to look alike, the one in the taurus is a refreshingly distinctive change. It is especially distinctive when compared to the generic instrument panels on the honda accord and toyota camry. And the taurus interior is more attractive and is of a higher quality than the chevy malibu.  the instrument panel is also well organized. The buttons and switches run from lower left to upper right within the oval for a double visual shock, but the arrangement is quite logical; it doesn't take long for a driver to make adjustments by touch alone without taking attention away from the road. The buttons and switches have a high-quality, high-tech feel.  bucket seats are standard on all models with a floor-mounted shifter. An optional front bench seat is available with a three-way flip-fold console seat. The center portion can be used as a seating position, with its own safety belt, or it can be flipped forward to become an armrest, or it can be folded open once more to reveal storage compartments for cups, tapes and coins. We found the center space too small for even small people. But for organizing the small items that get scattered around in a family car, this is an exceptionally inventive piece of design work. This year things are simpler, though it's still sometimes confusing which items are standard and which are optional. But the current generation taurus - now in its third season - is a leap ahead of the old one.  that leap started with one of the best chassis in the midsize class. A well-engineered chassis allows the suspension to perform well, keeping the car flat in corners and sopping up bumps and bangs. The taurus handles well, though it feels bigger and heavier than a camry, accord or malibu.  while the overhead-valve vulcan v6 provides adequate performance, the best choice is the double overhead-cam duratec. Smooth, quiet and responsive, ford's duratec engine feels good launching off the line. The additional power makes merging and passing quicker and safer. Although general seating comfort is good, we found the optional bench seat marginal in terms of lateral support. Reducing the model count makes the buying experience easier.  the taurus faces strong rivals in 1999, particularly from its perennial nemesis, the honda accord, which was redesigned last year. Add to that a strong charge from the recently redesigned toyota camry. Pricing and performance of the three are basically on a par. So when it gets to crunch time around the kitchen table, the choice in many families may hinge on that controversial taurus shape. assembled inatlanta, ga, chicago, il. options as tested3. 0-liter duratec v6, abs, automatic climate control, keyless remote entry, premium am/fm/cassette stereo. model testedtaurus lx.
